With many new homes to be added in the Canwick/Washingborough/Heighington area as part of the Central Lincolnshire Local Plan by 2036, including 3500 in the next 15 years, I believe improvements to the transport infrastructure locally needs to be a priority to support this housing expansion, and to support the decarbonisation of transport by encouraging the use of public transport options.
I feel an additional railway station on the Sleaford to Lincoln line would be hugely beneficial for those living locally and I have been putting together meetings to look into the feasibility of this.
Following on from meetings I've had with the Greater Lincolnshire LEP, Midlands Connect, NKDC and Network Rail, today I held a scoping meeting with Andy Gutherson, Executive Director of Place at Lincolnshire County Council and his team, and Paul McKeown, Investment Manager at Network Rail and his team, to discuss the idea. Residents and commuters who need to travel in and out of the city need a reliable rail service and good access, which would in turn help ease traffic congestion on the roads substantially and help us move towards a greater decarbonisation of transport locally.
I'm interested in hearing the views of people in the area to help inform my ongoing discussions. A few questions:
- What do you think of the idea?
- Where do you think a new station should go?
- How often do you think you'd use a Canwick area station?
- Where would you typically be going to if you did use it?
