This morning I bumped into Kaleb Cooper from hit TV show Clarkson's Farm in Downing Street on my way from a farming and food security meeting with the Prime Minister.
The Government has made a number of announcements today that commit to supporting British farmers, protecting their interests in future trade deals, providing support to boost domestic fruit and veg production and ensuring new investment in technologies
Lincolnshire produces so much of the nation's food, and I was pleased to represent our rural constituency this morning to highlight how strengthening the long-term resilience of the farming sector and investing in rural communities is paramount to our local economy. I also raised concerns about solar farm developments, pushed for improvements in labelling and asked what can be done to support those affected by fly tipping.
I am pleased that a package of support has been developed which includes:
putting farmer's interests at the heart of trade policy through a new framework for trade negotiations, committing to protect the UK’s high food and welfare standards and prioritise new export opportunities
unlocking the benefits of innovative technologies, including investing up to £30 million to drive forward the use of precision breeding technologies
protecting the interests of farmers by making sure they get a fair price for their produce
announcing that 45,000 visas will be available again to the horticulture sector next year, enabling them to plan ahead for the picking season
planning to cut the red tape currently holding farmers back from delivering projects on their land to diversify their incomes
