I have raised constituents' concerns with the Home Secretary about recent reports that the first wave of asylum seekers are due to arrive at RAF Scampton in mid-August and the effects this will have on Lincolnshire residents, including those living in Sleaford and North Hykeham.
Although it’s important to move asylum seekers out of hotels, I believe RAF Scampton is the wrong place to house them, given the remoteness of the site and the genuine concerns of Lincolnshire residents. I have been working with Sir Edward Leigh on this issue and have been in meetings with the Home Secretary on this matter.
I share frustrations at the asylum situation. I have consistently voted for tougher measures on illegal immigration and recently raised my concerns in Parliament during the Illegal Migration Bill debate. I hope that the Government’s measures to tackle illegal immigration—including the Illegal Migration Bill and the Rwanda resettlement scheme—will ensure that sites such as Scampton are ultimately not required.
