I voted to leave the EU in the referendum, and I know that the majority of my constituents did so too. Ever since being elected as your MP, I have consistently believed that the referendum result should be respected and we should leave the EU.
I was never under the illusion that these negotiations were going to be easy, and I believe that the Prime Minister warrants a great deal of personal credit for her efforts; while the top job is always difficult, these are uniquely trying circumstances and she has conducted herself with calm strength throughout.
Securing a deal that satisfies all sides in this situation is impossible, given the large range of views on this important issue. There are clear positives in the deal as it currently stands, including the end of free movement, but I understand the concerns of many of my constituents that there remain risks, particularly the ongoing uncertainty around our future relationship with the EU, and what will happen if we fail to reach an agreement by the end of 2020. Of particular concern is the backstop arrangement, and what seems to be our inability to leave this unilaterally. I will be meeting with the Attorney General this evening to get further clarification on these issues.
Although this is a significant step in the process, it is important to remember that this does not represent the final deal with the European Union. There will now be intense negotiations to produce a full Political Declaration for review by the Prime Minister and the leaders of the EU27, hopefully by the end of the month.
It is my duty as an MP, and as the representative of the people of Sleaford and North Hykeham, to ensure that we deliver the result of the referendum, and that we do not enter into an agreement that would not be right for the United Kingdom. I will be raising my concerns with my colleagues in Government, as well as passing on those of my constituents, and I will continue to work closely with my colleagues to deliver a deal that works for all of us and ensures the best possible outcome for our country.
