I recently met with Minister Stuart to discuss the support the Government is providing to households for their energy bills.
Electricity Bills
The overwhelming majority of homes have a domestic electricity meter. The Energy Bills Support Scheme supports these households with a £400 discount for energy bills which will be delivered automatically through six monthly instalments by electricity suppliers. Customers do not need to apply for the discount.
I have a small number of constituents who do not have a domestic meter, primarily those in park homes and those with a commercial connection (usually to a farmhouse). I have lobbied hard to ensure no constituent is left out and received confirmation a few weeks ago from the Prime Minister at PMQs that park homes will be included. Yesterday the Minister confirmed to me that an Alternative Funding scheme is being developed and an application scheme should open imminently.
Energy Price Guarantee: Gas and Electricity
The Government have also been providing support through the Energy Price Guarantee. This reduces the price energy suppliers can charge customers for units of gas and electricity used, providing discount from energy bills. This is in addition to the £400.
There is a similar commercial scheme, non-domestic consumers such as businesses and charities are being provided with energy bill relief, covering energy usage between 1 October 2022 and 31 March 2023.
Off-Grid Heating
There are also households in the Sleaford and North Hykeham constituency who are off the gas grid and use alternative fuels, such as heating oil and LPG. The Alternative Fuel Payment will provide a £200 payment to each home. This has been calculated as more than equivalent to the scale of the reduction to gas bills through the Energy Price Guarantee, for an average household.
Most households eligible for these payments will receive this support automatically as a credit on their electricity bill and the details of when this payment will be made will be confirmed shortly.
Additional Support for Vulnerable People
Further cost of living payments are being provided such as the £650 support for households on means tested benefits, £300 pensioner cost of living payment and £150 disability cost of living payment.
There are also winter fuel payments of between £250 and £600 for eligible pensioners and a cold weather payment for those eligible when the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celsius or below over 7 consecutive days.
