Pleased to have taken my Secure Academies 16 to 19 Private Members' Bill through its remaining stages in the Commons today.
Secure 16 to 19 academies, also known as secure schools, are a new form of provision for children sentenced or remanded to custody. They will be “schools with security” rather than “prisons with education”.
The Government have already established secure 16 to 19 academies in legislation. This Bill, which is supported by the Government, makes a number of amendments to the Act for the purpose of providing different requirements for secure 16 to 19 academies, which are also custodial establishments, as opposed to standard 16 to 19 academies.
These changes will essentially reduce unnecessary bureaucracy, provide for better and more integrated services, and protect the public purse.
